MARDAN: A workshop organized by the Integrated Regional Support Programme (IRSP) and the Freshwater Action Network South Asia (FANSA) emphasized the importance of women’s participation in the Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) sector, with speakers calling for greater representation of women in leadership and decision-making roles.

The event brought together female students from colleges and universities, social activists, community representatives, development sector officials, and members of civil society to discuss women’s empowerment and their contribution to sustainable development.

Addressing the workshop, IRSP Executive Director Shah Nasir, along with Muhammad Ismail, Nosheen Sardar, and other speakers, highlighted the central role women play in managing household water resources, promoting hygiene practices, and maintaining sanitation standards within communities.

Women’s participation key to effective WASH programmes

Speakers said that involving women in planning, policy-making, and leadership positions can significantly improve the effectiveness and long-term sustainability of WASH initiatives.

They noted that women’s participation helps address local challenges more effectively while contributing to broader public health and social development goals.

The discussion focused on issues including gender equality, leadership development, community representation, and employment opportunities for women in the WASH sector.

Call for equal opportunities and leadership roles

Participants stressed that access to clean water and adequate sanitation is a fundamental right and that achieving these goals requires meaningful involvement of women at all levels.

The speakers urged government institutions, development agencies, and civil society organizations to create more opportunities for women through training programmes, capacity-building initiatives, and increased representation in decision-making processes.

Commitment to gender equality

At the conclusion of the workshop, participants reaffirmed their commitment to promoting women’s leadership and advancing gender equality within communities and development programmes.

Shah Nasir said sustainable development cannot be achieved without the active and meaningful participation of women, adding that empowering women is essential for building resilient, healthy, and prosperous societies.
