PHNOM PENH: Chairman Senate Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani has called for greater parliamentary unity and collective action to tackle armed conflicts, terrorism, climate change and economic inequality, stressing the need to strengthen international law and resolve disputes peacefully.
Addressing the inaugural session of the 2nd Inter-Parliamentary Speakers’ Conference (ISC) in Phnom Penh on Thursday, Gilani said parliamentary diplomacy must move “from commitment to action, from dialogue to delivery, and from promises to results.”
The Senate chairman proposed developing mechanisms for a rapid parliamentary response to emerging crises and strengthening adherence to international law as a foundation for global peace and stability.
The conference was attended by Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Senate President Samdech Moha Borvor Thipadei Hun Sen.
Gilani welcomed the Cambodian leadership and thanked the King of Cambodia, the Senate and the people of Cambodia for hosting the conference. He described Prime Minister Hun Manet’s participation as a strong expression of Cambodia’s commitment to parliamentary dialogue and cooperation.
Referring to Pakistan’s experience, Gilani said parliamentary diplomacy could open new avenues for dialogue when traditional diplomatic channels face limitations. He also highlighted Pakistan’s cooperation with Saudi Arabia and Türkiye in efforts to promote regional peace and stability.
Quoting former prime minister Benazir Bhutto, Gilani said leadership for peace required courage and conviction, urging parliamentarians to demonstrate unity and vision in addressing global challenges.
Earlier, Gilani led participating speakers and delegates on a courtesy call with Hun Sen, President of the Senate of Cambodia.
The 2nd ISC, hosted by Cambodia, brings together parliamentary leaders to discuss peace, development and international cooperation.
