SHANGLA: Three people, including two women from Kohistan, were critically injured after a passenger car plunged into a deep ravine along the Shangla-Alpurai Road on Tuesday, according to rescue officials and local sources.

The accident occurred while a family was travelling from Kohistan through the mountainous Shangla route. Preliminary reports indicate that the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and fall into a deep gorge.

All three occupants sustained serious injuries in the crash, while the vehicle was extensively damaged. Eyewitnesses said the car rolled down a steep slope before coming to a stop, complicating rescue efforts.

Local residents rushed to the scene and initiated rescue operations before emergency responders arrived. Rescue personnel, assisted by volunteers, successfully retrieved the injured individuals from the ravine.

The victims were provided first aid at the scene and later shifted to the District Headquarters Hospital in Alpurai for emergency medical treatment.

Victims referred to Swat hospital

Hospital officials said the injured suffered multiple fractures and serious injuries. Due to the critical nature of their condition, doctors referred all three patients to Saidu Teaching Hospital in Swat for specialised treatment.

Medical sources described their condition as serious and said they remain under close observation.

Investigation underway

Police and relevant authorities have launched an investigation to determine the exact cause of the accident. Officials said factors such as speeding, mechanical failure, road conditions, and driver error will be examined.

The incident once again highlights the risks associated with travel on mountainous roads in the region, where sharp turns, steep slopes, and difficult terrain frequently contribute to traffic accidents.

Local residents have repeatedly called for improved road safety measures, including better road maintenance, protective barriers, warning signs, and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.

No fatalities were reported in the incident. Authorities said further details would be released as the investigation progresses
