Calls grow for government to fund Shakila Naz’s treatment

PESHAWAR: Concern is growing within Pakistan’s cultural community as renowned Pashto folk singer Shakila Naz continues to receive medical treatment following complications from a recent spinal surgery.

According to family sources, Shakila Naz underwent a major spinal operation last month. However, her health reportedly deteriorated after the procedure, and she remains under medical care.

The veteran singer’s condition has prompted calls from cultural and welfare organizations for government support, with advocates urging authorities to help cover her treatment expenses.

Family members said her husband, Farooq Firaq, is personally caring for her while managing mounting medical costs despite limited financial resources.

Cultural organization seeks government assistance

Nave Zhwand Adabi, Cultural and Welfare Organization Islamabad, has appealed to the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government to provide financial assistance for Shakila Naz’s treatment.

The organization’s chairman, Nasim Mandokhel, called on the Chief Minister and the provincial Culture Department to take immediate notice of the singer’s condition and ensure access to appropriate medical care.

The organization said resources allocated for cultural promotion should also be used to support artists facing serious health challenges, describing such assistance as both a humanitarian and cultural responsibility.

Shakila Naz is widely regarded as one of the prominent voices in Pashto folk music. Throughout her career, she has contributed significantly to the promotion of Pashto language, music and cultural heritage.

Her songs remain popular among audiences across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other parts of Pakistan, earning her recognition as a respected figure in Pashto folk singing.

Members of the artistic community have expressed hope for her recovery and called for timely support to help meet her medical needs.
