Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has confirmed that the FIFA World Cup 2026 will be his final appearance in international football, marking the end of a long and record-setting career at the global stage.
Speaking ahead of the pre-quarterfinal match against Spain, the 41-year-old forward said he intends to enjoy every moment of the tournament, adding that he feels no need to prove anything further in his career.
Ronaldo said he remains motivated by passion for the game and is satisfied with what he has achieved for both Portugal and world football. He noted that he will step away from international duty with a sense of fulfilment when the time comes.
The Portuguese star has already scored three goals in the ongoing tournament. He became the first player in history to score in six different World Cup editions after netting twice against Uzbekistan in the group stage. He also added a knockout-stage goal against Croatia from the penalty spot.
Ronaldo described the tournament as one of the most emotional of his career, saying he is focused on enjoying the experience rather than looking ahead.
He also reflected on criticism throughout his career, saying it has contributed to his growth as both a player and a person.
