Australia’s Steve Smith has equalled the world record for the most Test catches by a non-wicketkeeper, reaching 218 during the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin.
Smith took three catches on the second day of the match, taking his career tally to 218 catches in his 124th Test. Reuters also confirmed that Smith drew level with England’s Joe Root at the top of the all-time list.
Root has also taken 218 catches, although he has reached the mark in 166 Tests. Smith therefore matched the record in significantly fewer matches.
India’s Rahul Dravid is third on the list with 210 catches, followed by Sri Lanka’s Mahela Jayawardene with 205 and South Africa’s Jacques Kallis with 200.
The record is now likely to remain a point of interest as Smith and Root continue their Test careers. Root is scheduled to lead England against Pakistan in a three-Test series beginning on August 19, while Smith remains involved in Australia’s ongoing two-Test series against Bangladesh.
Smith’s milestone came on a difficult day for Australia, with Bangladesh ending the second day on 351 for six and holding a 153-run first-innings lead.
