ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif has directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to use all available resources to provide maximum assistance and relief to communities affected by floods across Pakistan.
The prime minister issued the directives during a meeting with NDMA Chairman Lieutenant General Inam Haider Malik, who briefed him on the prevailing weather situation, the impact of ongoing monsoon rains and flooding, as well as relief and rehabilitation efforts in affected areas.
PM Calls for Strong Coordination on Flood Relief
Prime Minister Shehbaz directed the NDMA to maintain effective coordination with provincial departments and Provincial Disaster Management Authorities (PDMAs) to ensure timely delivery of relief assistance to affected communities.
According to the briefing, relief operations will continue in flood-affected areas of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Jammu and Kashmir with support from the federal government.
The prime minister also appreciated the use of artificial intelligence and modern technology at the National Emergencies Operation Centre (NEOC) to strengthen disaster monitoring, forecasting and emergency response.
155 Killed in Rain-Related Incidents
According to the NDMA, 155 people have died and 460 have been injured in rain-related incidents across Pakistan between June 26 and August 14, 2026.
The latest figures underscore the continuing impact of the monsoon season, with authorities maintaining preparedness in vulnerable areas.
Meanwhile, the Flood Forecasting Division (FFD) has warned of the possibility of high-level flooding in rain-fed tributaries and drains connected to the Chenab and Ravi rivers as water levels rise between August 15 and 21.
The warning has prompted authorities to maintain heightened preparedness and strengthen coordination among federal, provincial and district-level emergency response institutions.
Prime Minister Shehbaz directed the relevant authorities to remain fully prepared and ensure that flood-affected citizens receive timely relief and assistance as the monsoon situation continues to evolve.
