Marvel Studios has released new footage from Avengers: Doomsday, giving fans their most detailed look yet at Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom and teasing a major confrontation involving the Avengers, Fantastic Four and X-Men. The new trailer was unveiled at Disney’s D23 event on August 14.
The film marks Downey Jr.’s return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe after his final appearance as Tony Stark/Iron Man in Avengers: Endgame. This time, however, he is playing Victor von Doom, one of Marvel’s most powerful villains.
Doctor Doom Takes Center Stage
The latest trailer focuses heavily on Doom and provides additional details about his background and motivations. The footage presents him as a powerful and tragic figure whose transformation is connected to a devastating personal loss.
The trailer also shows Doom confronting major Marvel characters, including Thor and Mister Fantastic, played by Chris Hemsworth and Pedro Pascal respectively. One of the standout moments shows Doom stopping Thor’s attack, emphasizing the scale of his powers.
The footage further teases the involvement of the X-Men, with returning stars including Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen, as well as characters from the Fantastic Four and Avengers franchises.
Major Marvel Characters Unite
Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and brings together characters from several corners of Marvel’s cinematic universe.
The cast includes Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Pedro Pascal, Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Florence Pugh, Sebastian Stan, Letitia Wright, Winston Duke and Simu Liu, alongside members of the Fantastic Four and returning X-Men actors.
The new footage suggests that the various superhero groups will have to work together against Doom as the threat expands across different parts of the Marvel universe.
Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds Add to the Buzz
The D23 presentation also featured a playful appearance involving Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, adding further excitement around the possibility of Wolverine and Deadpool becoming part of the wider Avengers storyline.
However, the available information does not establish that Reynolds will appear in the film, so speculation surrounding Deadpool should be treated separately from the confirmed cast.
Release Date Set for December 18
Marvel has kept much of the film’s plot under wraps, but the latest trailer has provided a clearer picture of the conflict between Doctor Doom and Marvel’s major superhero teams.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in cinemas on December 18, 2026, ahead of the planned Avengers: Secret Wars storyline.
With Robert Downey Jr. returning to the MCU in an entirely different role, the film is shaping up to be one of Marvel’s biggest cinematic events of 2026.
