ISLAMABAD: The ASEAN Committee in Islamabad marked the 59th anniversary of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations with a reception highlighting regional unity, cultural diversity and expanding ties between ASEAN and Pakistan.

The event, held at the Islamabad Marriott Hotel, brought together representatives of the Government of Pakistan, members of the diplomatic corps, international organisations, the private sector, civil society and friends of ASEAN.

The ASEAN Committee in Islamabad comprises the diplomatic missions of Brunei Darussalam, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Thailand and Viet Nam.

The reception was held under the ASEAN 2026 Chairship theme, “Navigating Our Future, Together,” reflecting the bloc’s emphasis on collective responses to shared challenges and emerging opportunities.

In his welcome remarks, Philippine Ambassador Dr Emmanuel R. Fernandez, who also serves as chair of the ASEAN Committee in Islamabad, said ASEAN had built a strong tradition of peace, dialogue and cooperation despite the region’s wide cultural, linguistic, religious and political diversity.

He also highlighted Southeast Asia’s economic dynamism, openness to partnerships and the potential of its young, educated and digitally connected population.

Federal Minister for National Heritage and Culture Aurangzeb Khan Khichi attended the reception and conveyed greetings from the Government and people of Pakistan to ASEAN member states.

Khichi said ASEAN had undergone a major transformation over nearly six decades, emerging as an increasingly integrated regional community of more than 700 million people with a combined economy approaching $4 trillion.

He also pointed to the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and ASEAN and said there was room for deeper cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

A major feature of the reception was a cultural showcase presented by ASEAN missions in Islamabad.

Country booths displayed traditional crafts, products, national motifs and other cultural elements representing the diverse heritage of Southeast Asian nations.

The event also featured an ASEAN food station offering traditional and specialty dishes from across the region, giving guests an opportunity to experience Southeast Asian cuisine and learn more about its cultural significance.

Cultural performances ranging from traditional dance and martial arts to contemporary presentations were also part of the programme.

Organisers said the displays, performances and cuisine reflected ASEAN’s diversity while also serving as a bridge for greater cultural understanding and people-to-people engagement.

The event also highlighted the role of tourism, education, business, culture and sustained diplomatic engagement in strengthening relations between Pakistan and ASEAN.

The ASEAN Committee in Islamabad thanked the Government and people of Pakistan for their hospitality and expressed appreciation to the guests and partners who attended the celebration.

ASEAN was established on August 8, 1967. The Islamabad reception marked nearly six decades of regional cooperation while also underscoring the bloc’s efforts to strengthen external partnerships as it approaches its seventh decade.
