ISLAMABAD: The National University of Sciences and Technology (NUST) is hosting its largest-ever cohort of international interns, marking a new milestone for the university’s flagship programme aimed at expanding academic, research and cultural engagement with students from around the world.
A total of 51 students from 15 countries are participating in the NUST Internship Programme for International Students (NIPIS-2026), combining academic and research exposure with an opportunity to experience Pakistan and its cultural heritage.
NUST Rector Dr Muhammad Zahid Latif interacted with the international interns during a session also attended by Pro-Rector Research, Innovation and Commercialisation Dr Rizwan Riaz.
Speaking to the participants, Dr Latif highlighted the role of international student exchanges in strengthening people-to-people connections, promoting cross-cultural understanding and encouraging academic collaboration.
He said initiatives such as NIPIS were helping expand NUST’s international engagement by bringing talented students from different parts of the world together and creating opportunities for academic and cultural exchange.

The rector also briefed the participants on NUST’s academic and research landscape, its knowledge ecosystem and the university’s vision for the future.
During the interactive session, the interns shared their experiences at NUST and reflected on their academic journeys. They also exchanged views with the rector on higher education, research and their future academic plans.
Launched in 2018, NIPIS has hosted students from friendly countries and provides participants with opportunities to gain academic and research experience while learning more about Pakistan, its society and cultural heritage.
The 2026 programme represents the largest cohort since NIPIS was launched, with 51 international interns from 15 countries participating this year.
The programme forms part of NUST’s efforts to broaden its international academic connections and promote collaboration and people-to-people engagement through education and research.
