American tennis legend and former world number one Serena Williams is set to return to competitive tennis at the age of 44, marking another chapter in one of the sport’s most celebrated careers.

The 23-time Grand Slam singles champion will compete in the doubles event at the Queen’s Club tournament, where she is scheduled to partner with rising Canadian player Victoria Mboko.

Williams will be making her return to competitive tennis after nearly four years away from the professional circuit.

Playing for the love of the game

Speaking about her comeback, Serena Williams said she no longer feels the need to prove anything to anyone and is focused on enjoying the experience of being back on court.

She said one of her greatest motivations is the opportunity for her daughters to watch her compete again, adding that she is not putting extra pressure on herself to achieve specific results.

Williams noted that after a career filled with major titles and achievements, winning and losing are no longer the primary measures of success for her.

Singles return remains possible

The tennis star also reflected on her previous comeback following the birth of her first daughter, Olympia, when she returned to reach four Grand Slam finals.

Her younger daughter, Adira, who was born in 2023, has not yet seen her compete on the professional tour.

While Serena did not rule out a future return to singles competition, she said her immediate focus remains on doubles and that additional preparation would be required before considering a singles comeback.

Widely regarded as one of the greatest players in tennis history, Williams’ return is expected to generate significant interest among fans ahead of the tournament.
