LONDON: Pakistani singer Saira Peter delivered a major performance at London’s Royal Albert Hall, presenting her signature blend of Sufi music and Western opera before an audience of approximately 5,000 people and viewers watching through live streaming platforms.
The performance took place during the BBC Proms Praise event and highlighted a fusion of Pakistani musical traditions and Western classical music. The concert featured a large-scale production involving a 500-member choir and the renowned All Souls Orchestra.
Among those attending was Pakistan’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, who praised Peter’s achievement and described her performance as an example of cultural exchange between Eastern and Western musical traditions.
Fusion of Pakistani and Western musical traditions
Peter performed a selection of original Sufi-opera compositions that combined elements of Pakistani raag, traditional instruments and Western orchestral arrangements.
Her opening performance of “Ho-sana” showcased the distinctive style that has become associated with her work. Organizers noted that the music required additional rehearsal time as orchestra members adapted to the complexities of Pakistani musical structures and vocal techniques.
Throughout the concert, Peter incorporated traditional taans and South Asian musical influences into Western classical compositions, creating a cross-cultural musical experience for the audience.
Collaboration with orchestra and choir
The event brought together the All Souls Orchestra and a 500-voice choir representing more than 40 choirs from across London.
For many choir members and musicians, it was their first opportunity to collaborate with the Karachi-born singer. According to organizers, the performance introduced audiences and performers alike to a musical style that bridges South Asian and Western traditions.
Artistic Director Michael Andrews introduced Peter as the evening’s representative of Asia before she took the stage in a traditional Pakistani outfit crafted by village artisans.
International engagements ahead
Peter performed four pieces during the concert and received strong audience appreciation throughout the evening.
Following the Royal Albert Hall appearance, she is scheduled to travel to the United States for charity concerts and meetings before returning to the United Kingdom for a recognition event at Windsor Castle later this year.
The performance adds another milestone to Peter’s international career and further highlights the growing global visibility of Pakistani artists in classical and crossover music genres.
