HOLLYWOOD: Actress Shailene Woodley has revealed that she was cast as Mary Jane Watson in The Amazing Spider-Man 2 but that all of her scenes were ultimately removed before the film’s release.
Woodley recently recalled the experience, saying Spider-Man was her favourite superhero and Mary Jane had been one of her favourite characters since childhood. She was therefore particularly excited when she was selected for the role.
According to the actress, she filmed around three scenes with Andrew Garfield, who played Peter Parker, but received a phone call nearly a year later informing her that she would no longer be part of the film.
Woodley said she was told that the movie was already introducing several new characters and that the filmmakers wanted to focus on the storyline involving Emma Stone’s Gwen Stacy and Garfield’s Peter Parker before introducing Mary Jane in a later instalment.
The planned third film in Garfield’s The Amazing Spider-Man series was eventually not made, meaning Woodley’s planned return as Mary Jane never materialized.
Looking back on the unexpected turn of events, Woodley addressed the situation with humour. She joked that there might have been another explanation and suggested, jokingly, that perhaps her performance was so bad that the filmmakers decided to remove her from the movie.
Although Woodley never appeared as Mary Jane in the finished film, her casting and deleted scenes have remained a notable piece of behind-the-scenes history from The Amazing Spider-Man franchise.
