LAHORE: The Punjab government has launched the “Apna Khet Apna Rozgar” scheme to provide agricultural land and financial assistance to landless rural residents, as part of efforts to expand livelihoods and strengthen the agriculture sector.
The initiative aims to support low-income households by enabling access to cultivable land and grants for farming, with officials saying it could help increase rural employment and agricultural productivity across the province.
Provincial Information Minister Azma Bukhari said the programme has been introduced under the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz and builds on earlier welfare initiatives focused on housing and social support.
Under the scheme, eligible beneficiaries will receive agricultural land along with financial assistance ranging from Rs50,000 to Rs250,000 to support cultivation and related activities.
Officials said land valued at approximately Rs160 billion is being allocated to landless villagers, with the condition that it will be used strictly for agricultural purposes.
Broader agriculture initiatives
The government says the programme is part of a wider strategy to modernise agriculture and support farmers. Recent measures include the Kisan Card programme, Green Tractor scheme, Super Seeder support and tubewell solarisation initiatives.
Authorities believe these interventions have contributed to improved crop output, including wheat production, and are aimed at strengthening the agricultural base of the province.
Focus on rural livelihoods
The scheme is intended to enhance income opportunities in rural areas by providing access to productive assets. Officials say further details on eligibility criteria and implementation mechanisms will be shared in due course.
The initiative reflects ongoing efforts by provincial authorities to prioritise agriculture and rural development as key components of economic policy.
