LAHORE, April 20 — Punjab has launched a large-scale shrimp farming project aimed at converting barren land into productive economic zones, as part of efforts to expand aquaculture, create jobs and boost exports.

The initiative, introduced under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, is being developed across multiple sites, with significant progress reported in infrastructure and pond construction.

Rapid progress at major project sites

At the Sargodha Shrimp Estate, 118 of 126 ponds have been excavated, with embankments and water supply systems more than 90% complete. Tube wells have been installed, and road construction and warehouse development are nearing completion.

At the Ali Wala Shrimp Estate, around 90% of the 1,267-acre site has been cleared, with 642 ponds completed. Drainage, road development and water systems are also advancing, alongside basic infrastructure including administrative buildings and worker facilities.

At Shahgarh Shrimp Farm, key infrastructure — including water supply, electrification and road networks — is close to completion.

First government-led modern shrimp farming initiative

Officials said this is Punjab’s first scientifically managed shrimp farming project under government supervision, with conditions assessed as suitable for aquaculture.

Feeding and supplementation processes are underway, with early indicators suggesting improvements in production and quality.

Focus on jobs, exports and land use

The project aims to convert underutilised land into productive assets while supporting employment generation and strengthening export potential.

Authorities say the initiative is part of broader efforts to modernise agriculture and diversify income sources through aquaculture development.
