LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has paid tribute to Chaudhry Abdul Jalil, popularly known as “Chacha Cricket,” as the iconic cricket supporter prepares to retire from attending and supporting Pakistan matches after decades of service to the game.
The tribute comes ahead of the final One Day International (ODI) between Pakistan and Australia at Gaddafi Stadium, marking the end of an era for one of the country’s most recognizable sporting personalities. The PCB acknowledged Chacha Cricket’s long-standing commitment to Pakistan cricket and his role in representing the passion of supporters both at home and abroad.
In a special social media tribute, the board shared a collection of photographs highlighting his journey alongside the national team and thanked him for his unwavering dedication over nearly four decades.
A familiar face in Pakistan cricket
Chacha Cricket has been a constant presence at Pakistan matches since the 1980s and is widely regarded as one of the most recognizable cricket fans in the world. His association with the sport began during Pakistan’s home fixtures in Sharjah, where he regularly supported the national side from the stands.
In 1996, he formally became associated with the PCB as the team’s official mascot, further strengthening his connection with Pakistan cricket.
A legacy of dedication
According to accounts shared over the years, Chacha Cricket made significant personal sacrifices to continue supporting the national team, including leaving a well-paying job in the United Arab Emirates and spending personal resources to attend matches across different countries.
Born in Sialkot on October 8, 1949, he became instantly recognizable for his trademark green outfit, white beard and cap featuring Pakistan’s crescent and star.
Over the years, Chacha Cricket has become a symbol of loyalty and commitment to Pakistan cricket, supporting the team through both successes and setbacks while earning respect from players and fans around the world.
The PCB said his passion for the game and steadfast support have left a lasting mark on Pakistan cricket and inspired generations of supporters.
