Fatima Zahra Rewarded for Historic CWG Medal

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has awarded national boxer Fatima Zahra a cash prize of Rs2 million and a certificate of appreciation for winning a historic bronze medal for Pakistan at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

Prime Minister’s Adviser on Inter-Provincial Coordination Senator Rana Sanaullah Khan presented Fatima Zahra with the cheque and certificate at a ceremony in Islamabad, describing her achievement as a source of pride for Pakistan.

Fatima Zahra secured the bronze medal in the women’s 60kg boxing event at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games, becoming the first Pakistani woman boxer to win a Commonwealth Games medal.

Historic Milestone for Women’s Boxing

Fatima guaranteed herself a medal after defeating New Zealand’s Jordan Wilson 5-0 in the quarter-final. She later lost her semi-final to Canada’s Marie-Bathoul Al-Ahmadieh, with the competition format awarding bronze medals to both losing semi-finalists.

Speaking at the ceremony, Rana Sanaullah described Fatima’s performance as a landmark achievement for Pakistan and said she could serve as an inspiration for young athletes, particularly women pursuing careers in sport.

He said Pakistani women have the ability to compete successfully at the international level and bring recognition to the country through sport.

Government Pledges Support for Athletes

The prime minister’s adviser said the government was working to promote sports and provide talented athletes with better training opportunities and modern facilities.

He said efforts were also being made to improve Pakistan’s sports infrastructure and expand facilities at the grassroots level so that young talent could be identified and developed from an early stage.

Fatima Zahra’s bronze was Pakistan’s first medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games and marked a significant milestone for women’s boxing in the country.
