ISLAMABAD: Pakistan has decided not to send its contingent to the Asian Senior Fencing Championships in New Delhi despite receiving an official invitation from the host country, according to media reports.

The tournament is scheduled to begin on June 19 and will be the first time India hosts the continental fencing championship. Pakistan’s withdrawal means the country’s athletes will not participate in one of Asia’s leading fencing competitions this year.

The Asian Senior Fencing Championships are expected to bring together top fencers from more than 30 countries across Asia and Oceania, along with nearly 100 international delegates, referees, and technical officials.

Invitation extended under international regulations

Event organisers in India reportedly invited all eligible member nations in line with international sporting regulations, which require host countries to extend participation opportunities to regional federations.

Pakistan received the invitation but has opted not to take part in the championship. The Pakistan Fencing Federation has not publicly detailed the reasons behind the decision.

Impact on athletes

The withdrawal means Pakistani fencers will miss the opportunity to compete against some of the continent’s top-ranked athletes and earn valuable international ranking points.

The championship is regarded as one of the most important events on the Asian fencing calendar and serves as a key platform for athletes seeking international exposure and competitive experience.

Sporting ties remain limited

Pakistan’s absence from the New Delhi event comes amid a broader history of interruptions in sporting exchanges between Pakistan and India. Cross-border participation in various sports has often faced challenges linked to administrative procedures, travel arrangements, and diplomatic considerations.

Despite those challenges, organisers proceeded with standard international protocols by extending invitations to all eligible participating nations.

The Asian Senior Fencing Championships will begin in New Delhi on June 19 with athletes from across the region competing in individual and team events.
