The Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) program continues to provide financial support to high-achieving graduate students pursuing master’s and doctoral degrees in Canada. The merit-based scholarship is designed to promote academic excellence and research at universities across Ontario.
Funded jointly by the Government of Ontario and participating universities, the program helps students cover educational and research-related expenses while contributing to the province’s research and innovation goals.
Scholarship funding and support
Recipients of the Ontario Graduate Scholarship can receive CAD 5,000 per academic term. Depending on the duration of study, eligible students may receive:
- CAD 10,000 for two consecutive academic terms
- CAD 15,000 for three consecutive academic terms
The funding can be used to help pay tuition fees, research costs, academic materials, and living expenses during graduate studies.
Eligibility criteria
The scholarship is open to students enrolled in eligible master’s and doctoral programs at participating universities in Ontario.
Selection is based on academic achievement, research potential, leadership qualities, and overall merit. Applicants are generally required to:
- Be enrolled in a full-time graduate program
- Study at a participating Ontario university
- Demonstrate strong academic performance
- Meet any institution-specific eligibility requirements
International students with valid study permits may also qualify for designated OGS awards offered by participating institutions.

The scholarship is available through several leading universities in Ontario, including:
- University of Toronto
- McMaster University
- Queen’s University
- University of Waterloo
- University of Ottawa
- York University
- Western University
Additional participating institutions across Ontario also administer OGS funding through their graduate studies offices.
Application process
Applications must be submitted directly to the university where the student intends to study. Requirements may vary by institution, but applicants are commonly asked to provide:
- Academic transcripts
- A research or study proposal
- Reference letters
- Academic assessment forms
- Supporting documents highlighting research achievements and leadership experience
Students applying to more than one university are generally required to submit separate applications to each institution according to individual institutional deadlines and procedures.
