Electricity Subsidy for Consumers Using Up to 200 Units

The Ministry of Energy has rejected reports that the federal government plans to end electricity subsidies for households using up to 200 units per month, saying no such change is under consideration.

In a clarification, the ministry said the existing relief policy for low-consumption domestic users has not been withdrawn or revised. It said the government remains committed to supporting low-income and protected electricity consumers.

Federal Minister for Power Awais Ahmed Khan Leghari also rejected reports of subsidy withdrawal for protected consumers, saying eligible users would continue to receive support through the QR code-based verification system.

Earlier reports had claimed that Pakistan had assured the International Monetary Fund it would move away from untargeted electricity subsidies under climate financing and reform commitments. The Express Tribune reported in May that Pakistan had pledged to shift from untargeted subsidies to a more targeted support mechanism by January next year.

However, the Ministry of Energy said there was no plan to end relief for households consuming up to 200 units of electricity per month. It said the government’s focus was on ensuring that subsidies reach eligible consumers and are not misused.

According to officials, distribution companies have begun checking electricity meters across the country to identify possible misuse of subsidies. These checks include verification of households with multiple meters and grid connections linked with solar systems.

The ministry said QR codes being used in the field are meant only for billing and consumer data verification. It clarified that the QR code system is not linked to any change in the subsidy policy.

Officials said the verification process is intended to improve transparency and ensure that support is directed toward deserving low-consumption households.
