UPPER DIR: The Dir-Chitral Action Forum has urged the federal and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa governments to allocate funds for the proposed Dir Motorway, the CPEC Western Corridor, and the creation of a separate administrative division in the upcoming budget, describing the projects as essential for regional development and connectivity.
Speaking at a press conference, Forum President Abdullah Khan, along with Badshah Uddin, Kifayat Jan, and other representatives, said the projects would improve transportation links, promote trade, and support economic growth across Dir and Chitral districts.
The speakers noted that discussions regarding the Dir Motorway and the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) Western Corridor have been ongoing for several years, but construction work has yet to begin.
Survey completed for Dir Motorway
Abdullah Khan said the survey for the Dir Motorway has been completed and that the district administration in Lower Dir is currently holding discussions with landowners regarding land acquisition and compensation matters.
He said residents of Bajaur, Lower Dir, Upper Dir, Lower Chitral, and Upper Chitral continue to face transportation and connectivity challenges. According to the forum, improved road infrastructure could facilitate access to services, support tourism, and create employment opportunities in the region.
Potential trade link to Central Asia
Forum representatives argued that linking the Chakdara-Dir and Dir-Upper Chitral routes with the CPEC Western Corridor could strengthen regional connectivity and provide an alternative route to Gilgit-Baltistan during emergencies.
They also highlighted the potential of the Broghil region in Upper Chitral as a future gateway for trade with Central Asian countries, including Tajikistan, through expanded road infrastructure and cross-border connectivity.
Demand for separate division
The forum reiterated its demand for the establishment of a separate administrative division for Chitral and surrounding areas, arguing that it would improve public access to government services.
Speakers noted that a proposal regarding additional administrative divisions was announced by former chief minister Mahmood Khan in 2022 but has yet to be implemented.
Call for action in upcoming budget
The forum said it has been advocating for these projects for the past six years and urged both federal and provincial authorities to include them in upcoming development plans.
Representatives warned that if progress is not made on the projects, residents of Dir and Chitral may consider further public demonstrations to press for their demands.
