MADRID: Several AI World Cup predictions that identified Spain as a leading contender before the tournament are gaining renewed attention after the team secured a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 final.
Artificial intelligence models, data analytics firms, and football forecasting platforms had simulated the tournament thousands of times before kickoff. While many favored Spain to lift the trophy, experts continue to stress that predictive models estimate probabilities rather than guarantee results.
Multiple AI Models Favored Spain
Sports analytics company Opta ran 25,000 tournament simulations before the World Cup and ranked Spain as the most likely champion with a 16.1% probability.
Similarly, ChatGPT produced a forecast based on information including FIFA rankings, qualifying results, player injury reports, and travel schedules, identifying Spain as a strong title contender.
Technology publication Decrypt reviewed predictions from seven advanced AI models. Four selected Spain to win the tournament, while three favored Argentina. Several models also highlighted Spain’s teenage star Lamine Yamal as a potential match-winning player.
Other Forecasts Offered Different Outcomes
Not all prediction models reached the same conclusion. French data consultancy AVISIA estimated France and Argentina each had a 21% chance of winning the title before the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, the Gemini AI model cited by sports platform RotoWire projected France as the most likely champion after running 100 simulations, illustrating that different methodologies can produce different forecasts.
AI Predictions Are Probabilities, Not Guarantees
Historical results show that AI-based forecasts are not always accurate. Before the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Opta’s supercomputer ranked Brazil as the tournament favorite, but Brazil was eliminated by Croatia in the quarter-finals.
Analysts note that AI models can help estimate likely outcomes based on available data, but the final result ultimately depends on performances on the pitch. Spain will now look to convert those predictions into a World Cup title in the final.
