Veteran educationist, social activist and community leader Imdad Hussain Acharani died in Karachi on Sunday evening after suffering a cardiac arrest, family sources said.
Acharani, who had been unwell for the past few days, was serving as Taluka Education Officer for Primary Education in Jati, District Sujawal, at the time of his death. His passing drew tributes from education officials, political figures, teachers and community members across Sujawal and Thatta.
Born on January 5, 1970, in Tarr Ali Pur village, Acharani was the son of Imam Dino Khowaja, an educationist and social activist from District Thatta. He earned a Master’s degree in Political Science and a Bachelor’s degree in Education from the University of Sindh.
Acharani held several key positions in the education departments of Thatta and Sujawal districts during his career. He was also active in teachers’ welfare movements and served more than once as district president of the Primary Teachers Association.
Role in education and community work
Colleagues said Acharani remained closely involved in efforts linked to teachers’ rights and employee welfare. Aslam Parvez, Deputy Education Officer, said the education department had lost a dedicated administrator.
Parvez said Acharani was known for his straightforward approach and often faced criticism for it, but continued to work for the rights of employees, particularly teachers.
Beyond education, Acharani was active in social and cultural organizations. He was associated with the Sindh Peoples Culture and Youth Organization in District Thatta and played a role in organizing former prime minister Benazir Bhutto’s visit to Sujawal in 1993.
He also served as secretary and later president of the Shia Imami Ismaili Council for Shahbunder. He headed the Sindh Students Organization and the Young Students Association, Hussainabad.
Tributes from colleagues and community leaders
His close associate and fellow educationist Mushtaq Ramzan Ali said Acharani contributed to cultural activities in Taluka Jati, including stage plays and local events. He said Acharani also acted in several stage productions.
Columnist and labour unionist Ghulam Mustafa Hashmani expressed grief over his death, saying Acharani’s passing had created a vacuum that would be difficult to fill.
As a community leader, Acharani coordinated with former PPP MPA Humaira Alwani, Senator Dr Karim Ahmed Khowaja and MNA Syed Ayaz Shah Shirazi on several local development initiatives, including a water filtration plant, Sui gas supply and solar lights.
Hundreds of people attended his funeral procession, including PPP MPA Shah Hussain Shah Shirazi, Shafqat Malkani, District Council Chairman Danish Khan Malkani, Dost Muhammad Thaheem and Sain Rasool Bux Khalifo, custodian of Sheikh Salamat’s shrine.
Acharani was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard near Tarr Khowaja village.
