Tom Heaton has signed a one-year contract extension with Manchester United, with the experienced goalkeeper also helping the club meet UEFA’s Champions League squad registration requirements.

Manchester United F.C. goalkeeper Tom Heaton has signed a one-year contract extension that will keep him at the Premier League club for the upcoming season.

Heaton, who returned to Manchester United in 2021 after previously coming through the club’s academy system, will continue to serve as an experienced squad goalkeeper as United prepare for a return to the UEFA Champions League.

The extension also carries importance under UEFA squad registration rules, which require clubs competing in the Champions League to include a minimum number of club-trained and association-trained players in their 25-man squad.

Heaton qualifies as a club-trained player after progressing through United’s academy before leaving the club in 2010 and later rejoining more than a decade later.

Among Manchester United’s current senior squad, only Heaton, Luke Shaw and Amad Diallo meet the club-trained requirement, while Kobbie Mainoo is expected to qualify for UEFA List B eligibility during the 2026-27 season.
