Reusable syringes reportedly still being sold in Pakistan despite safety ban

ISLAMABAD: Reusable syringes are reportedly still being sold in parts of Pakistan despite a ban on unsafe and repeatedly used injection equipment, raising concerns among health experts about the risk of infectious disease transmission.

According to reports, counterfeit auto-disable syringes have been found in the market. Although these products are labeled as “Auto Disable,” they can reportedly be used more than once, undermining safety measures designed to prevent the reuse of syringes.

The issue has been reported in several cities, including Peshawar, Multan, and Jacobabad, where the sale and use of such syringes have allegedly been identified. Reports have also pointed to the production and distribution of substandard reusable syringes from the Gadoon Amazai Industrial Estate in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Health risks linked to syringe reuse

Sources claim that some unregistered medical practitioners continue to reuse the same syringe on multiple patients while charging small fees for injections. Health experts warn that this practice can significantly increase the risk of transmitting infectious diseases.

Medical professionals say the use of counterfeit and non-compliant safety syringes weakens infection prevention efforts and may contribute to the spread of diseases such as hepatitis and other blood-borne infections.

DRAP promises action against violators

The Drug Regulatory Authority of Pakistan (DRAP) has stated that strict action will be taken against individuals and businesses involved in the sale of substandard syringes despite existing regulations.

According to officials, monitoring and enforcement efforts are being intensified, while investigations into the matter remain ongoing. Authorities say additional measures are being considered to address potential public health risks and ensure compliance with safety standards.
