Karachi: A 24-year-old man has died of rabies at Jinnah Hospital, becoming the latest reported fatality linked to dog bites in Karachi and taking the city’s reported rabies death toll this year to 18.

The deceased, identified as Shahryar from Qayyumabad, had reportedly been bitten by a stray dog around two months ago but did not receive a rabies vaccination after the incident.

According to hospital officials, Shahryar was brought to the emergency department at around 3:40am after experiencing symptoms including irritability, restlessness and hydrophobia for about a week. Doctors treated him for suspected rabies encephalitis.

The Jinnah Hospital neuromedicine team examined the patient and administered sedative medication, but his condition continued to deteriorate. He died at around 9am during treatment.
