Punjab Approves Major Wheat Purchase To Keep Flour Prices In Check

LAHORE: The Punjab government has decided to purchase one million metric tonnes of wheat from the Pakistan Agricultural Storage and Services Corporation (PASSCO) as part of efforts to stabilize wheat and flour prices across the province.

The decision was approved by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif and is aimed at ensuring a steady supply of wheat while keeping flour and bread affordable for consumers.

Under the plan, wheat will be supplied to flour mills at a rate of Rs3,300 per maund to help maintain price stability in the market.

Provincial authorities said the move is intended to support food security and prevent fluctuations in wheat and flour prices, which directly affect households across Punjab.

The government also rejected reports suggesting restrictions on wheat transportation from Sindh to other provinces through Punjab. Officials stated that no verified complaints have been received regarding disruptions in wheat supplies from Sindh to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

According to officials, the process of collecting wheat stock declarations is ongoing and comprehensive data is still being compiled. They noted that the current wheat crop has comparatively smaller grain size, making accurate stock assessments important for future food security planning.

The Punjab government further stated that after meeting its own food requirements, it will continue to facilitate wheat supplies to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa as part of its inter-provincial responsibilities.

Officials expressed confidence that the wheat procurement plan will help ensure market stability and maintain the availability of essential food items for consumers.
