LAHORE: A resolution has been submitted in the Punjab Assembly proposing restrictions on social media access for children under the age of 16, including the introduction of an age verification system and stronger legal safeguards for young users.
The resolution, submitted by Punjab Assembly member and Child Protection and Welfare Bureau Chairperson Sarah Ahmad, calls for legislative and regulatory measures to protect minors from cyberbullying, online exploitation, and exposure to harmful digital content.
Resolution Calls for Age Verification System
According to the resolution, social media platforms should implement an effective age verification mechanism for users under 16. It also recommends introducing legislation to regulate minors’ access to social media services.
The proposal further urges the federal government and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) to establish a comprehensive regulatory and monitoring framework aimed at improving online safety for children.
Proposal Cites International Examples
The resolution notes that several countries, including Australia, France, China, and some U.S. states, have introduced laws or age-based restrictions governing children’s use of social media.
It argues that Pakistan should also strengthen its legal framework to create a safer digital environment for children.
Focus on Child Online Safety
Sarah Ahmad said protecting children from the risks of the online world is both a constitutional and moral responsibility. She added that every child has the right to a safe digital environment and that stronger legal protections are needed to safeguard their best interests.
