ISLAMABAD, April 22, 2026Shehbaz Sharif has directed authorities to fast-track electric vehicle (EV) adoption across Pakistan, linking the transition to lower fuel import costs and improved energy security.

Chairing a high-level review, the prime minister said ongoing initiatives must move faster to expand EV manufacturing, charging infrastructure and consumer access. Officials said the push aligns with broader efforts to reduce reliance on imported fuels and support environmental goals.

According to the briefing, 72 manufacturing certificates have been issued for electric motorcycles and rickshaws, along with four for electric cars. Authorities have also received 123 applications to set up EV charging stations nationwide.

Targets and incentives

Officials outlined a plan to shift 30% of vehicles in Pakistan to electric power within five years, with projected savings of up to $4.5 billion in fuel costs.

The government is also considering a scheme to provide electric bikes to employees up to Grade 16 on easy instalments to encourage adoption.

Policy implementation

The prime minister directed that subsidies under the National EV Policy, particularly for low-income users, be implemented with full transparency. He also called for faster execution of incentive programmes.

Wider policy direction

Officials said expanding EV use is part of a broader strategy to improve energy efficiency, reduce import dependence and address environmental concerns. The meeting was attended by federal ministers, senior officials and representatives from key economic institutions.
