LAHORE: The Pakistan Cricket Board is expected to introduce major changes to national players’ central contracts ahead of the new contract cycle starting on July 1, according to sources familiar with the discussions.

The current financial model for central contracts is set to expire on June 30. The three-year structure was introduced in 2023 during the tenure of former PCB chairman Zaka Ashraf and has continued under current chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

Sources said preliminary talks on the new contracts are underway, while the final decision on the revised financial structure will be made by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

Performance and fitness likely to shape new contracts

Last year, the PCB awarded central contracts to 30 players, with no cricketer placed in Category A for the first time.

The upcoming contracts are expected to include significant category changes based on players’ recent performances and fitness levels. Several players are likely to be promoted or downgraded under the revised structure.

According to sources, the chances of Mohammad Nawaz, Abdullah Shafique, Faheem Ashraf, Hussain Talat and Khushdil Shah being retained in the new contracts appear low.

Meanwhile, domestic performers including Azan Awais and Abdullah Fazal are likely to be considered for inclusion.
