Pat Cummins aims to play at least 21 more Tests during busy year for Australia

CANBERRA, June 4: Australia captain Pat Cummins has expressed his desire to feature in as many as 21 Test matches over the next 12 months as the national team prepares for one of its busiest schedules in recent years.

The fast bowler said his primary focus remains Test cricket despite concerns over workload management and the physical demands facing Australia’s pace attack. His comments come after returning to competitive cricket following a period on the sidelines due to a back injury.

Cummins recently resumed action in the Indian Premier League (IPL), marking his first competitive appearances in four months. He said recent medical assessments had produced encouraging results and that he is now focused on building his fitness for the demands of the Test format.

Australia faces packed Test schedule

Australia are set to begin a demanding run of international cricket with a home Test series against Bangladesh in August.

The schedule could see the team play up to 21 Test matches within a year, including major assignments against India, England and South Africa.

Cummins acknowledged that maintaining the same fast-bowling combination throughout such a heavy schedule would be difficult and suggested player rotation may be necessary to manage workloads and fitness.

Test cricket remains top priority

The Australian captain said Test cricket would remain his main priority, indicating that his participation in limited-overs cricket and the Big Bash League could be reduced if required.

Cummins also voiced support for experienced fast bowler Josh Hazlewood, saying he believes the pacer can continue to play Test cricket regularly despite recent injury concerns.

Australia’s management is expected to closely monitor the fitness of its fast bowlers as the team prepares for an extended period of international competition.
