Younis Khan likely to become Pakistan Test head coach amid PCB restructuring plans

LAHORE: Former Pakistan captain Younis Khan is expected to be appointed as head coach of Pakistan’s Test team as part of a broader restructuring of the national side, according to sources familiar with the developments.

If confirmed, Younis Khan would replace Sarfaraz Ahmed, who was appointed to the role in April and has overseen both youth and senior team assignments in recent months.

The expected change comes after Pakistan’s disappointing 2-0 Test series defeat to Bangladesh in the ongoing World Test Championship cycle. Sarfaraz began his coaching tenure with the Bangladesh series after previously guiding Pakistan’s Under-19 team to victory in the 2025 Asia Cup.

PCB considering wider changes

Sources indicate that the Pakistan Cricket Board is considering broader changes within the Test setup following recent results.

Reports have also suggested that Test captain Shan Masood could face uncertainty regarding his position, while all-rounder Salman Ali Agha has emerged as a potential candidate for the captaincy.

The PCB is also reportedly looking to involve former Pakistan stars Younis Khan and Mohammad Hafeez in key management and cricket operations roles.

Younis Khan’s credentials

Widely regarded as one of Pakistan’s most accomplished batters, Younis Khan remains the country’s highest run-scorer in Test cricket.

He captained Pakistan to victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2009 and has previously served in coaching and mentoring roles with the national team.

PCB officials are said to view his leadership experience, knowledge of Test cricket and long-standing association with the national side as valuable assets in strengthening Pakistan’s red-ball setup.

Possible role on selection committee

In addition to the head coach position, Younis Khan is also expected to be considered for a place on the national selection committee.

The current selection panel includes Aaqib Javed, Misbah-ul-Haq, Asad Shafiq and Sarfaraz Ahmed.

The PCB has not yet issued an official announcement regarding the reported changes
