LAHORE: Punjab Police plans to introduce smart patrol vehicles equipped with advanced surveillance systems to detect fake number plates, e-challan defaulters and proclaimed offenders across the province.

The initiative, centred on the “Police Eye Smart Van,” is in its final development phase and aims to improve traffic enforcement, strengthen law monitoring and enable real-time identification of violators on roads.

According to officials, the vehicles will be fitted with 360-degree cameras capable of scanning surroundings while in motion. The system will automatically identify vehicles with pending e-challans, fake registrations and individuals listed as wanted, allowing immediate alerts and response.

The smart vans will be integrated with the Punjab Safe Cities Authority system, enabling real-time data sharing. Authorities said the cameras can capture and process vehicle and citizen data within a range of up to 100 metres, while also identifying overloaded vehicles.

Officials believe the technology will enhance monitoring capacity and improve enforcement of traffic laws across urban and highway networks.

As part of the project, the department is also planning to introduce electric vehicles for the Police Eye fleet to reduce fuel costs and improve energy efficiency.

The first prototype is expected to be completed next week and presented to the provincial leadership for approval. Following clearance, the initial deployment is planned for model roads in Lahore, with one to three vehicles proposed for each district.

The project is being supervised by Additional Inspector General Logistics and Procurement Fawaduddin Qureshi. Officials estimate that each vehicle, including equipment, will cost around Rs110 million.

Authorities say the introduction of smart patrol cars is part of broader efforts to modernise policing through technology and improve road safety across Punjab.
