Punjab plans to launch Pakistan’s first public e-bike rental service in Lahore

LAHORE: The Punjab government has approved plans to introduce Pakistan’s first public e-bike rental service, with Lahore selected as the pilot city for the environmentally friendly transportation initiative.

Officials say the project is designed to improve urban mobility by providing affordable transport options between residential and commercial areas and major public transport stations.

Under the first phase of the project, authorities plan to deploy 10,000 electric bikes across Lahore and establish 300 docking and charging stations at key locations throughout the city.

According to the Housing Department, the initiative will support the development of a modern “last-mile connectivity” system, enabling commuters to complete short-distance journeys conveniently through a mobile application.

Mobile app-based service planned

Officials said users will be able to rent e-bikes within seconds using a dedicated mobile application, making the service accessible for students, office workers and other commuters.

The project is expected to improve access to public transportation networks while offering a cost-effective alternative for daily travel within the city.

Environmental and traffic benefits

Authorities estimate that the use of 10,000 electric bikes could significantly reduce carbon emissions, fuel consumption and traffic congestion in Lahore.

The initiative forms part of broader efforts by the provincial government to promote sustainable transportation and address environmental challenges, including air pollution and smog.

Multiple agencies to support project

According to officials, the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA) will provide land for docking and charging stations, while the Transport Department, Safe City Authority and other government institutions will assist in implementing the project.

The proposal was reviewed during a meeting chaired by Housing Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal, who directed officials to ensure that all safety requirements are incorporated into the system.

He also instructed that underage individuals should not be allowed to access the service through the mobile application.

Awaiting final approval

Noor-ul-Amin Mengal said the initiative is being developed under Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s green mobility vision and aims to provide modern, affordable and environmentally sustainable transportation options.

Officials said suitable locations for docking stations are being identified across the city and that implementation will begin after receiving final approval from the chief minister.
