LAHORE: Punjab’s digital governance efforts have received international recognition after the Punjab Safe Cities Authority’s (PSCA) child protection initiative, “Mera Pyara,” was named a Champion Project at the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes 2026, an international program supported by the United Nations.

The recognition highlights Punjab’s use of digital public services to address child safety and family reunification challenges. According to a PSCA spokesperson, the achievement marks a significant milestone for Pakistan’s digital governance model on a global platform focused on information and communication technology initiatives.

The spokesperson said two PSCA projects — the Virtual Women Police Station and “Mera Pyara” (Virtual Center for Child Safety) — were shortlisted for the WSIS Prizes in April 2026. Both projects were recognized among international digital innovation initiatives aimed at improving public service delivery.

Child safety initiative

Launched to help locate and reunite missing children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities with their families, “Mera Pyara” has become one of PSCA’s key public service platforms.

According to official figures, the initiative has handled more than 145,000 child-related cases since its launch, including over 54,000 cases involving missing children.

The platform has helped reunite more than 77,000 missing children with their families and has also assisted thousands of differently-abled children. Authorities said the service has additionally provided support in cases related to child exploitation, online harassment, and other child protection concerns.

International recognition

PSCA officials said the WSIS recognition reflects growing international attention toward technology-driven public services in Pakistan.

The World Summit on the Information Society Prizes recognize projects from around the world that use digital technologies to address social and public-sector challenges. The inclusion of two Punjab-based initiatives on the shortlist placed Pakistan among countries showcasing digital solutions for citizen services and public safety.

Officials said the recognition underscores the role of technology in improving access to public services and supporting vulnerable groups through digital platforms.
