Heavy rain has lashed Rawalpindi and Islamabad, prompting authorities to declare a rain emergency as water levels in Nullah Lai continue to rise. The Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast further rainfall across the twin cities and surrounding areas over the next two to four hours.
The twin cities received an average of 91.76 millimetres of rain, with significant rainfall recorded in several areas. Authorities have placed drainage and emergency teams on high alert as water levels rise at key points along Nullah Lai.
Nullah Lai water level rises
According to rainfall data, Saidpur received 91mm, H-8 recorded 86mm, Golra 88mm, Bokra 70mm, Shamsabad 66mm and Chaklala 48mm.
Water levels in Nullah Lai continued to increase, reaching 21 feet at Katarian and 15 feet at Gawalmandi. Authorities have been closely monitoring the nullah and surrounding drainage channels amid the ongoing rainfall.
The Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) has deployed staff and heavy machinery in low-lying areas to manage drainage operations. Teams and machinery have been positioned at Liaquat Bagh, Committee Chowk, Murree Road and Sadiqabad, while WASA officials are monitoring the situation in the field.
Sirens have also been sounded in areas around Nullah Lai to warn residents. Authorities have advised people to avoid unnecessary travel and stay away from drainage channels and electricity poles.
Traffic affected by heavy rain
Heavy rainfall has also affected traffic on Islamabad Expressway and other major roads.
Islamabad Traffic Police issued an advisory urging motorists to reduce speed, maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and use fog lights where necessary. Drivers were also advised to use side mirrors and indicators properly and wear seat belts.
Motorcyclists have been advised to use the extreme left lane and wear helmets. Traffic police officers are present on roads to assist and guide commuters during the adverse weather.
Rawalpindi Traffic Police has also urged residents to exercise caution while travelling.
More rain expected
The weather department has forecast additional rainfall in Islamabad and surrounding areas. Further showers are also expected in Rawalpindi, Taxila, Wah Cantonment, Murree and the Galiyat region.
Authorities have urged residents, particularly those living near Nullah Lai and other drainage channels, to remain alert as the rain continues.
