Pakistan Writes to FIFA Seeking Inclusion of Lyari in International Football Plans

Pakistan has formally written to FIFA proposing the inclusion of Karachi’s Lyari for hosting international football-related events, highlighting the area’s long-standing passion for the sport and its existing facilities.

The development comes amid renewed discussion on Pakistan’s football infrastructure and its aspirations for greater participation on the global stage. According to officials, the proposal has been forwarded in a letter to FIFA, requesting an assessment of stadium facilities in Lyari, a neighbourhood widely regarded as the country’s football hub.

Lyari, often referred to as the “mini Brazil” of Pakistan due to its deep-rooted football culture, is known for producing local talent and hosting large community viewings of international matches, particularly major tournaments involving teams such as Brazil and Argentina.

The proposal was raised by Sindh Assembly member Nabeel Gabol, who said Lyari has two major venues — Peoples Stadium and Lyari International Stadium — that he believes are capable of hosting international-level matches. He also claimed that Pakistan could feature in future FIFA World Cup-related activities.

His remarks came during an informal media interaction, where he responded to criticism and skepticism from fellow lawmakers regarding the feasibility of hosting international matches in the area.

The statement has sparked debate within political and sports circles over infrastructure readiness, global standards, and Pakistan’s long-term ambitions in international football.
