Bangladesh Test cricketer Nayeem Hasan has alleged that he was assaulted and harassed by police personnel in Chattogram, prompting calls for an impartial investigation from the Bangladesh Cricket Board and the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh.
The incident reportedly took place on Friday night in the Lalkhan Bazar area of Chattogram city after Nayeem returned from Dhaka and was travelling home from Shah Amanat International Airport in an auto-rickshaw.
According to ESPNcricinfo, Nayeem said police stopped the vehicle and behaved aggressively without giving a clear reason. He alleged that he was forcibly taken from the auto-rickshaw and later beaten with sticks and plastic pipes.
Nayeem said he repeatedly identified himself as a national cricketer, but his claims were ignored. He later told reporters that he wanted a fair investigation and justice over the incident.
Prothom Alo reported that three police personnel, including a sub-inspector, were withdrawn from Khulshi police station and attached to police lines after the incident.
Chattogram police said preliminary findings indicated possible procedural violations and that action would be taken against those found responsible. Police officials said a full inquiry was under way.
The Bangladesh Cricket Board and the Cricketers’ Welfare Association of Bangladesh condemned the alleged harassment and called for an impartial investigation. The Daily Star reported that senior cricketers, including Mushfiqur Rahim, also reacted strongly on social media.
Nayeem, a Test off-spinner, has been part of Bangladesh’s red-ball setup and was named in the squad for the upcoming Test series against Zimbabwe, according to Cricbuzz.
