Pakistan fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi has said he remains the national team’s captain for the upcoming World Cup, while noting that the National Champions Cup will help selectors assess players ahead of the tournament.
Speaking to the media during the trophy unveiling ceremony for the National Champions Cup in Multan, Afridi said, “As of now, I am the captain for the World Cup.” He added that performances in the domestic tournament would assist in finalising the World Cup squad.
National Champions Cup Begins in Multan
The National Champions Cup will be played from August 11 to 18 at Multan Cricket Stadium. Pakistan Greens, Pakistan Whites, Pakistan Blues and Pakistan Gold will compete in a single round-robin format.
The top two teams in the points table after the league stage will meet in the final on August 18.
The four sides will be led by Shadab Khan, Saim Ayub, Sahibzada Farhan and Shaheen Shah Afridi, respectively. All matches will be played as day-night fixtures and are scheduled to begin at 3pm Pakistan time.
Shadab Misses Trophy Ceremony
Pakistan Greens captain Shadab Khan was unable to attend the trophy unveiling and press conference because of fever. All-rounder Faheem Ashraf represented the team at the event.
The tournament provides an opportunity for players to demonstrate their form and fitness as Pakistan prepares to finalise its squad for the World Cup.
