GUANGZHOU: A university student in China’s Guangzhou city was caught allegedly using AI smart glasses to cheat during an examination, highlighting growing concerns over the misuse of artificial intelligence in academic settings.
According to local media reports, invigilators at South China Agricultural University noticed an unusual green light flashing from the student’s glasses shortly after the exam began. The incident has renewed debate over how educational institutions can address emerging AI-powered cheating methods.
Invigilators Detected Suspicious Activity
Reports said the examination supervisors observed the green light approximately 10 minutes after the test started and asked the student to remove the glasses.
The student reportedly admitted to using AI-enabled smart glasses during the exam after being questioned by the invigilators.
Smart Glasses Linked to Multiple AI Models
According to China News Weekly, the student was wearing Leqi Smart Glasses, a device introduced in September last year.
The report said the glasses are integrated with several AI models, including DeepSeek, Tongyi Qianwen, Zhipu, and Doubao. The device can capture images of questions, analyze them using AI, and provide responses almost instantly.
Investigators said the student allegedly captured images of exam questions by touching the frame near the temple, allowing the AI system to process the content and generate answers.
Social Media Discussion Follows Incident
Reports said the device’s LED indicator was partially concealed during use, but a green reflection remained visible through the lenses from certain angles, leading to the student’s detection.
Following the incident, social media users discussed ways to hide the indicator light, while online marketplaces reportedly began advertising AI smart glasses for short-term rental to students. Some sellers were also reported to be offering guidance on using the devices more discreetly.
The university has not publicly announced any disciplinary action related to the incident.
