MUMBAI: Health experts are reporting an increase in Influenza A cases in parts of India alongside a rise in new COVID-19 infections, prompting renewed calls for preventive measures to reduce the spread of respiratory illnesses.
Doctors say Influenza A and COVID-19 share many similar symptoms, making it difficult to distinguish between the two without medical evaluation. They advise people, particularly those at higher risk of complications, to seek medical advice if symptoms are severe or persist.
What Is Influenza A?
According to Dr. Sameer Garde, Director of Pulmonology and Lung Transplant at Gleneagles Hospital Mumbai, Influenza A is a viral respiratory infection that spreads through droplets released when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks.
The illness can develop suddenly, with patients often feeling significantly unwell within a few hours of symptom onset.
Common Symptoms and High-Risk Groups
Health experts say common symptoms include high fever, body aches, sore throat, dry cough, headache, and severe fatigue.
Most healthy individuals recover within five to seven days. However, older adults, pregnant women, young children, and people with diabetes, asthma, heart disease, or weakened immune systems face a higher risk of complications, including pneumonia.
Why Are Cases Increasing?
Dr. Manas Menger, a senior pulmonologist at KIMS Hospital Thane, said Influenza A cases have risen noticeably in recent weeks. He attributed the increase to seasonal weather changes, frequent travel, crowded indoor environments, and reduced immunity among some individuals.
Meanwhile, Mumbai-based surgeon Dr. Amit Thadani said on social media that Influenza A cases in the city were increasing rapidly and advised people to wear masks in crowded public places.
How to Reduce the Risk
Doctors recommend washing hands regularly, covering the mouth and nose while coughing or sneezing, wearing a mask in crowded places when feeling unwell, ensuring good indoor ventilation, and avoiding close contact with others if symptoms develop.
Health experts also recommend seasonal influenza vaccination, particularly for people at higher risk of severe illness, as an effective preventive measure.
