Couples Who Exercise Together May Build Stronger Relationships,

Couples who exercise together may enjoy stronger relationships, better communication and more quality time, according to research from Brigham Young University’s School of Family Life.

The study examined 1,693 young couples in the United States and looked at their exercise habits, communication patterns, conflict resolution and experiences with disagreements. Researchers found an association between exercising together and stronger relationship quality.

Walking May Be an Easy Way to Exercise Together

The research found that couples who exercised together appeared to experience relationship benefits that were not seen to the same extent among those who exercised separately.

Walking was highlighted as a common activity for couples because it does not require a gym or intense physical effort. It can also provide an opportunity for partners to spend time together and discuss everyday matters, including household responsibilities.

How Shared Activities Can Bring Couples Closer

Researchers said exercising together gives couples an opportunity to combine physical activity with shared time. Regular activities such as walking can create space for conversation and interaction outside the pressures of daily routines.

The study does not establish that exercising together directly causes stronger relationships, but it identifies a link between shared physical activity and relationship quality.

Managing Arguments Also Matters

The findings come alongside earlier research into communication and conflict between partners.

A May 2024 study suggested that how couples handle disagreements can influence relationship quality. Arguments are common even among happy couples, but avoiding unnecessary conflict over minor issues may help maintain a healthier relationship.
