Islamabad: English Biscuit Manufacturers and the Network of Organizations Working for Persons with Disabilities Pakistan have opened a Neuro-Inclusive Discovery Room for children with autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and other developmental conditions.
The facility was inaugurated at the Center of Excellence for Disability Inclusion in Korangi, Karachi, and is designed to support children’s cognitive, sensory, motor and social development through interactive play and experiential learning.
Developed with technical input from The Dawood Foundation’s MagnifiScience Centre, the space adapts science-based exhibits into activities intended to support sensory integration, executive functioning, movement and social interaction.
Interactive Learning Designed Around Neurodiverse Children
The Discovery Room has been developed as an accessible learning environment where children can take part in guided, play-based activities tailored to different developmental needs.
Organisers said the space is intended to help children build confidence, independence and curiosity while working towards developmental milestones in a supportive setting.
According to Pakistan’s 2023 Population Census, about 3.1% of the population lives with a disability. Access to specialised learning and developmental facilities, however, remains limited in many parts of the country.
Partners Highlight Need for Inclusive Infrastructure
Dr Zeelaf Munir, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of EBM, said the initiative brought together science, play and therapeutic learning to create opportunities for neurodiverse children.
She said the project reflected the company’s commitment to supporting children’s learning and development through partnerships with disability inclusion and education organisations.
NOWPDP Chief Executive Officer Omair Ahmed said inclusive education depended on sustainable infrastructure that allowed children with disabilities to participate in learning on an equal basis.
He said the new facility was designed to provide a dignified and accessible environment for children with different abilities.
The project forms part of broader efforts by EBM and NOWPDP to expand inclusive learning opportunities and improve access to developmental support for children with disabilities.
