Indian Supreme Court Dismisses Plea Against Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat Renovation

NEW DELHI: India’s Supreme Court has dismissed a petition challenging the renovation of Shah Rukh Khan’s Mannat residence in Mumbai, ruling that homeowners have the legal right to renovate or modify their private property as long as they comply with applicable laws.

The decision brings an end to the latest legal challenge against the renovation project after the court declined to interfere with the approvals already granted for the work.

Petition Challenged Renovation Approval

The petition was filed by a Mumbai resident, who questioned the government approval granted for renovation work at Mannat, the sea-facing residence owned by Shah Rukh Khan and his wife, Gauri Khan, in Bandra.

The petitioner argued that the project required additional environmental clearance from India’s Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change and alleged violations of environmental regulations.

Supreme Court Rejects Fresh Appeal

During the hearing, the petitioner’s lawyer requested that the matter be sent back to the National Green Tribunal (NGT) for reconsideration. The Supreme Court rejected the request.

Chief Justice Surya Kant observed that every citizen has the right to construct, repair, or renovate a private residence, provided all legal requirements are fulfilled.

The court also questioned the petitioner’s intent and emphasized that the case would be decided strictly on the basis of law rather than the public profile of the property owner.

NGT Had Earlier Upheld Project

The National Green Tribunal had previously dismissed a similar challenge, finding that the renovation project complied with environmental regulations and that the required approvals had already been obtained.

With the Supreme Court declining to intervene, the legal challenge to the renovation of Mannat has effectively come to a close.
