ISLAMABAD: COMSATS University Islamabad (CUI) has been ranked the top university in Pakistan in the U.S. News & World Report Best Global Universities 2026–2027 rankings, securing 410th position worldwide, according to ranking data released by the university.
CUI said it achieved an overall score of 52 and finished ahead of other Pakistani institutions included in the global rankings.
According to the university, Quaid-i-Azam University was ranked 451st globally, followed by the University of Lahore at 479th, University of Management and Technology at 573rd and National University of Sciences and Technology at 590th.
The U.S. News Best Global Universities rankings place significant emphasis on academic research performance, research reputation, publications and international scholarly impact, making them particularly relevant for research-intensive institutions.
For CUI, the latest result marks another improvement in its international academic profile as Pakistani universities seek greater visibility in global research and higher education rankings.
Rector CUI Prof Dr Raheel Qamar said the university’s position reflected its continued focus on research, innovation and international collaboration.
“CUI’s standing as Pakistan’s leading university in this prestigious global ranking reinforces our commitment to research excellence, innovation and international collaboration,” he said, adding that the university would continue working to increase the global impact of its research.
CUI records strong subject rankings
CUI also reported strong performances across several individual academic disciplines.
According to the university, it was ranked 28th globally in Mathematics, making it one of its strongest-performing subject areas.
It also placed 67th in Green and Sustainable Science and Technology, 142nd in Engineering, 151st in Electrical and Electronic Engineering and 178th in Artificial Intelligence.
The university said it also maintained international positions in Computer Science, Chemistry and Chemical Engineering.
The subject results underline CUI’s growing focus on science, engineering and emerging technology fields at a time when universities worldwide are competing for stronger research output and international collaboration.
Pakistani universities expand global presence
The inclusion of several Pakistani institutions in the 2026–27 rankings also reflects the growing international visibility of the country’s higher education sector.
Global university rankings use different methodologies, meaning an institution’s position can vary substantially between ranking systems depending on whether greater weight is given to research, teaching, citations, internationalisation, employer reputation or other indicators.
The U.S. News system is particularly focused on research performance and academic reputation rather than undergraduate teaching alone.
CUI has also appeared in other major international rankings in recent years, including the QS and Times Higher Education systems. Its own official material lists the university among Pakistan’s established research-focused institutions with international rankings across engineering, computer science and physical sciences.
The latest U.S. News result, CUI said, strengthens its position as a research-intensive university and reflects its contribution to scientific research, technological development and Pakistan’s wider knowledge economy.
