RAWALAKOT: Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Police said law enforcement agencies have restored control of the situation in Rawalakot after an overnight operation ended the siege of the Combined Military Hospital (CMH), which authorities said had been surrounded by armed protesters.
According to an official police statement, the unrest began on June 7 when armed and violent elements allegedly opened fire on law enforcement personnel and later laid siege to CMH Rawalakot, disrupting medical services and creating security concerns inside one of the region’s key healthcare facilities.
Authorities said a targeted operation was conducted during the night of June 7-8 to clear the hospital and restore normal operations. The police stated that protecting patients, medical staff, civilians, and public property remained the primary objective throughout the operation.
Hospital services have since been fully restored, according to officials.
Four security personnel lose their lives
The AJK Police said four law enforcement personnel have been killed during the recent unrest since June 6, including three members of the AJK Police and one member of the Frontier Constabulary. Several other personnel were reported injured.
The statement also claimed that three individuals associated with the banned Action Committee died during the violence, while a number of others sustained injuries.
Roads reopen as normal activity resumes
Police said the armed protesters have been dispersed and law and order has been restored across Rawalakot. Major roads are now open to traffic, while markets and commercial centers have resumed routine business activities.
Authorities further alleged that public and private property was damaged and fires were set at several locations during the disturbances.
Investigation under way
The police said legal action against those involved in the violence is continuing and pledged to bring those responsible before the courts.
Funeral prayers for the four fallen security personnel will be held with full state honors, according to the statement.
Officials also urged citizens to avoid relying on rumors and unverified information, advising the public to follow official sources for updates on the situation.
The developments mark one of the most significant security incidents in Rawalakot in recent months, drawing attention to the impact of unrest on public services, healthcare facilities, and daily life in the region.
