PESHAWAR, May 19: WAPDA has spent Rs1.9 billion on socio-economic development schemes in areas surrounding the Mohmand Dam Project under its Confidence Building Measures and corporate social responsibility initiatives.
According to WAPDA, a total of Rs4.5 billion has been allocated for 54 development schemes identified by the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government in consultation with local representatives.
The projects are aimed at improving infrastructure, drinking water supply, education, health, sports and electricity facilities for communities living in the project area.
Officials said 18 schemes have been completed so far under the first phase of the programme.
Work continues on roads, schools and water supply
WAPDA officials said work was continuing on key projects including the Abazai-Yousuf Baba Road and a drinking water supply scheme for Sappare Mulagori.
Construction of five schools in Mohmand, Bajaur and Malakand districts is also expected to begin soon.
The planned schools include primary and girls primary schools in Pindyali, Bajaur and Malakand areas.
The update was shared during a review meeting on development schemes chaired by Additional Chief Secretary Planning and Development Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Lt (Retd) Islam Zeb.
Member of the National Assembly from Mohmand district Sajid Khan also attended the meeting.
Mohmand Dam project
Speaking at the meeting, Mohmand Dam Project General Manager and Project Director Fasih Ullah Paracha said the dam was being constructed on River Swat to support water storage, electricity generation and water supply needs.
According to WAPDA, the project will store 1.29 million acre-feet of water, generate 800 megawatts of hydropower and supply 300 million gallons of water daily to Peshawar for municipal use.
The Mohmand Dam is considered one of Pakistan’s major water and energy infrastructure projects aimed at improving water management and low-cost electricity generation.
