PESHAWAR: The College of Home Economics at the University of Peshawar organized an awareness seminar in connection with World Hypertension Day to educate students and the public about hypertension, its early diagnosis, prevention, and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.

The hypertension awareness seminar brought together health experts, teachers, students, and members of the public to discuss the growing health risks associated with high blood pressure and the need for preventive healthcare practices.

Principal of the college Prof. Dr. Shazia Shah, seminar organizer Dr. Aleena Badshah, speaker Dr. Amber Ashraf, and senior nutritionist Asma Waheed attended the event.

Addressing the seminar, Dr. Aleena Badshah said hypertension had become one of the fastest-growing health issues worldwide, while many people remained unaware that they were suffering from the condition.

She described hypertension as a “silent killer” that can affect the heart, kidneys, brain, and other organs without obvious symptoms. She encouraged young people to adopt balanced diets, regular exercise, proper sleep, and stress management to reduce health risks.

Experts stress healthy lifestyle and regular checkups

Dr. Amber Ashraf said unhealthy eating habits, excessive fast food consumption, smoking, stress, lack of physical activity, and unhealthy lifestyles were among the major causes of hypertension.

She emphasized the importance of regular blood pressure monitoring and preventive healthcare measures to avoid complications related to the disease.

Senior nutritionist Asma Waheed highlighted the role of nutrition in maintaining overall health and preventing chronic illnesses.

She advised students to include fruits, vegetables, and natural foods in their daily meals and to make physical exercise part of their routine.

Awareness material distributed among participants

During the seminar, participants received information about the symptoms, prevention, and treatment of hypertension. Awareness material was also distributed among attendees, while students participated in interactive discussions with health experts.

At the conclusion of the event, Prof. Dr. Shazia Shah thanked the organizers, guest speakers, and participants and stressed the importance of promoting healthy lifestyles among young people through educational awareness programmes.

Certificates were later distributed among the guest speakers in recognition of their participation and contributions to the seminar.
