ISLAMABAD: Russia has reaffirmed its support for Pakistan’s upcoming chairmanship of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO), while calling for greater cooperation among member states in investment, technology, energy, transport and the digital economy.
Russian Ambassador to Pakistan Albert P. Khorev made the remarks during a meeting of ambassadors of SCO member states hosted by Pakistan’s National Coordinator for the organisation, Dr Muhammad Faisal, on August 19.
The meeting focused on organisational matters linked to Pakistan’s upcoming chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of State.
Khorev said the SCO remained among Russia’s key foreign policy priorities and stressed the importance of advancing practical initiatives in finance, investment, technology and industrial cooperation.
He also called for deeper engagement in the digital economy, transportation and energy, areas that have emerged as major components of the SCO’s broader economic and connectivity agenda.
At the conclusion of the meeting, the Russian ambassador wished Pakistan success in its upcoming chairmanship and reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment to constructive cooperation within the organisation.
Pakistan is set to assume the rotational chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of State in September 2026 and is expected to host the SCO summit in 2027, according to Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
Pakistan is already chairing the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorist Structure for 2025-26 and has identified regional connectivity, trade, investment, energy and digital innovation among its key priorities within the organisation.
