Karakoram Highway Reopened for Small Vehicles After Two-Day Closure
The Karakoram Highway (KKH) has been partially reopened for small vehicles after a two-day closure due to landslides and heavy snowfall. However, the highway will remain closed for heavy traffic until the road is fully cleared.
According to police sources, the decision to reopen the highway for small vehicles was made after the National Highway Authority (NHA) and the district administration cleared the road of debris. However, due to the risk of further landslides, heavy traffic will not be allowed to ply the highway until the road is fully cleared.
The KKH was closed on Saturday due to heavy snowfall and landslides, which blocked the road at several points. Over 2,000 vehicles were stranded on the highway, with passengers facing severe difficulties due to the lack of food and shelter.
The district administration and NHA have dispatched machinery to clear the road, and work is underway to restore the highway. On the other hand, the people of Gilgit-Baltistan have appealed to the government to take emergency measures to provide relief to the affected areas, as there is a risk of further landslides due to heavy rainfall..
